Amsterdam has years of experience in “creating land”. Ever since the dam around the Amstel river was build in 1250, people in Amsterdam have been busy creating artificial islands. The city is called ‘Venice of The North’ for a reason!
Our newest achievement is ‘IJburg’, a suburb of islands in the eastern part of Amsterdam. On 6 islands over 18.000 residences are being build! The islands are constructed by pouring a lot of sand in the water, like ‘The World project' in Dubai.
You will find a lot of architectual hotspots here; modern family residences, floating houses, apartment buildings, offices and more. The bridges also play a big part on IJburg. There are nearly 60 bridges constructed to connect all the Islands!
The tour takes about 2 to 3 hours. Most fun is to do this by bike, but by foot it’s just as beautiful (than we start on IJburg itself). Our guide will telll you about the buildings, architecture, planologic influences and history. Included in the tour is a short break for a drink in a nice café or typical Dutch bar.
